Experienced Sports Journalist and Broadcaster committed to getting the story

Latest

Welcome

Hey everyone. My name is Mike Radomski and I am a sports reporter currently working in Evansville, Indiana. I have 10 years of sports reporting experience dating back to my time covering the Bergen Catholic Crusaders and continuing with my reporting of the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. As a broadcast journalism major and sports studies minor, I was a play by play broadcaster and radio host at Quinnipiac before moving on to become the lead broadcaster for the Evansville Otters baseball club. I have served as a sports editor for Patch.com in Fort Lee, New Jersey and also announced sporting events for LMC-TV in Mamaroneck, New York. Now, I am back in Evansville as the Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting for the Otters and I want to thank the organization for allowing me to do what I love every day. I would also like to thank my family for their undying support and dedication to my dream.

I started the site to highlight some of my old work and post new pieces of material as well. Feel free to let me know what you think and contact me anytime.

Thanks and best wishes!                                                                                                                                                     -Mike

SATURDAY AFTERNOON STROLL – Sept. 17, 2011

Surprised these still exist!

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – Saturday was a gorgeous day for a stroll, so I grabbed my camera, laced up my sneakers and went out to explore around town.

There were a lot of new things to see so I started to walk in a new direction, noticing the light blue sky and a lot of interesting things around me. One of them was a sign saying how fast you could go at a certain time, and another included a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring book.

But the highlight was stumbling upon the Merchant Outlet Mall in town. It is a flea market full of nick-knacks and takes about two hours to walk through. The top item may have been a piece of my childhood, a Power Rangers lunchbox for $3.50 .

It was a wonderful trip down memory lane and a good chance to get some extra exercise too.

The Merchant Outlet Mall is a very unique place to visit and recommend this “blast from the past” if you have a chance to stop one by this classic.

HARRISON DEDICATES NEW ROMAIN STADIUM

Public address announcer Zane Clodfelter and me in the press box at Romain Stadium.

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – Friday night football!

On Friday evening, I had a chance to see another Harrison High School football game as the Warriors dedicated their brand new stadium in town. Public address announcer and good friend Zane Clodfelter invited me to contest against Central High School and we were able to witness the unveiling of the newly named Romain Stadium.

Harrison fell behind early but had a large comeback in the second half before the home crowd. The Warriors did end up losing 35-25, but we had a great time watching the game from the press box.

Zane is also the PA announcer for the Evansville Otters in the summer and can be heard during the offseason as the voice of the Harrison Warriors.

I was honored to see the football game and highly recommend seeing the new field if you have a chance to visit Evansville this football season.

My lunch with former MLB pitcher Andy Benes

Andy Benes and I after his speech.

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – Today was an amazing day! I was able to meet a lot of new people in town including former MLB pitcher Andy Benes. He spoke at the Evansville Downtown Quarterback Club, the oldest known group of its kind, and Benes told some wonderful stories to all those in attendance.

Andy openly talked about his faith, his days growing up in Evansville, being a three-sport star, and a number of other topics.

But something that really caught my attention was one of Andy’s finishing thoughts. The pitcher who recorded 2,000 strikeouts and was the number one overall pick in the 1988 MLB Draft said that being a good person above all else was the legacy he wanted to leave.

It struck me particularly because we all strive for greatness when the achievement of being a great person may be the enduring accomplishment for us all. That is something I strive to be each day and it meant a lot to hear it from Andy Benes this afternoon.

I can’t thank my good friend Bix Branson enough for inviting me to the event and taking the picture with Andy (something I will be able to keep along with the messages that  Andy re-emphasized for us all).

BUMP, SET, SPIKE! MY RETURN TO VOLLEYBALL BROADCASTING!

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – What a rush! I was able to get behind the microphone today to announce a volleyball match for the first time in two full years! It is one of my favorite sports to broadcast because there is no break, no room for errors, and no time to think. You literally call the sport as you see it with no time to second guess what you are witnessing.

It was a spectacular morning, announcing the University of Evansville Purple Aces come from behind three set to two victory over the University of Illinois – Chicago. Then there was a little bit of a break before I put the headset back on to broadcast the final match of the Dunn Hospitality Invitational featuring Evansville and the Arizona Wildcats. The home town Aces rallied back to force a fourth set before eventually losing but I had such a blast being back in that atmosphere. I haven’t experienced something like that since announcing Quinnipiac volleyball matches for WQAQ and the Bobcat Sports Network.

A special thanks to general manager Tom Benson, the staff of Aces TV, and everyone who presented me with such an opportunity to do what I love again. I am truly blessed and will continue to rock the planet every chance I get!

ATTENDING THE OPENING OF A NEW STADIUM – HARRISON HIGH SCHOOL

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – Through the course of the summer, I have driven past this open plot of land where a football stadium was being built and had an awesome opportunity to watch progress from one day to the next. Well, the field is now complete and Friday evening was the first football game held at Harrison High in the school’s history. Thanks to my great friend and public address announcer Zane Clodfelter, I was able to get a unique perspective of the new stadium including a view from the press box. Here are some of the pictures:

(FLORENCE, Kentucky) – One of the benefits of traveling is the ability to see new things and one of the best kept secrets are the themed suite rooms at the Wildwood Inn. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at some of the rooms this morning and here is the Treehouse suite! Enjoy!

On the road again… Kentucky-bound

(THE FAST LANE ON 1-64) – After a week-long homestand an an off day on Monday, I am back on the road today with the Evansville Otters. The team begins a six-game road trip this morning as they travel to Florence, Kentucky and then continue along to O’Fallon, Missouri. Life on the road has been good so far as I am researching the next opponent, taking down a lot of notes for today’s broadcast and getting some reading in.

We are just passing Louisville, Kentucky as I type this and the view of the Ohio River is majestic.

Here’s to seeing new places, meeting new people, and swapping some stories.

Rock the planet!

Tour Around “Consol Energy Park”

(WASHINGTON, Penn.) – Before the series finale on Thursday night, I had a chance to take a tour around Consol Energy Park with Kate Billings, the Community Outreach & Merchandise Manager for the Washington Wild Things. Here are some of the things I saw:

Photo of the Day – 99 hits!

99 hits and 0 runs is quite the accomplishment...especially in the third inning!

(NORMAL, ILLINOIS) – No, the Evansville Otters did not get 99 hits in their game against the Normal CornBelters on Saturday night, but they did win their sixth game in a row on a six game road trip. This photo was taken during the top of the third inning of the game where the scoreboard operator added one too many hits to the visitor’s hit total. Because there is only a “Hit+1″ button, the operator continued to bring the total up, hoping that it would reset after reaching 99. Unfortunately, the number stopped there for a few minutes after the hit total continued to tally one after another , much like a deli ticket-taker tally rings up on a Saturday.

Anyway, it was another great broadcast with some wonderful stories to be told and some great anaologies. I am riding on the bus now, somewhere in Illinois at this point, and on the way back to Evansville, Indiana. It has been almost a full week being away from our hometown but am very excited to begin another homestand at Historic Bosse Field including a doubleheader on Sunday evening.

“Pull over…it’s unsafe to drive during this game.”

The Evansville Otters go for a five-game winning streak tonight following an 8-6 comeback win against Normal on Thursday night in 10 innings.

(NORMAL, Illinois) – On the air last night, I used that phrase above for the first time in my broadcasting career. In the ninth inning, I said, “If you’re in the car, pull over…it’s unsafe to drive during this game.” It came to me naturally and summed up the type of atmosphere at the ballpark in just a few words. Evansville had trailed the entire game until the top of the ninth inning when the Otters scored a pair of runs to tie the game against the Normal CornBelters at six. Reliever Josh Cephas forced extra innings with a scoreless frame and the Otters surged into their first lead of the game with another two runs in the 10th. It was an emotion-tugging baseball game that pulled back and forth like two children fighting ov

er a doll. Evansville has now won a season-high four games in a row, all coming at the start of this roadtrip. They will look for five straight tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CDT and our Evansville Otters pregame show will start at 6:45 p.m. Here is the link to tune in!

The Wildwood Inn – Arctic Room

(FLORENCE, Kentucky) – Before leaving the Wildwood Inn yesterday, I had the honor to tour around one of the themed room suites. It is honestly one of the coolest rooms you may get a chance to see in a lifetime. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Arctic room:

Whoa Baby! Evansville sweeps Florence in extras

Evansville Otters

(FLORENCE, Kentucky) – It was so much fun to announce that game yesterday between Evansville and Florence. It was pins and needles, edge of your seat excitement! At multiple points during the game, I just kicked my chair away and hung on for every pitch like a person waiting for a life or death phone call. I was hooked and brought that level of intensity into the call of each and every word. Phrases like “Whoa Baby!”, “So,so,good” and “Signing Off” become taglines in this incredibly unusual game. There was a 19-minute power outage, a defensive substition mid-at bat, a closer getting a chance to bat, multiple late-inning rallies from Florence, and an extra inning leadoff home run from a player who was just 2 for 24. Whew! And it all came in a night where the temperature was in the mid-90s all evening, which just adds to the lore of the memory. Events like this will stay with me for a long time. After securing their first sweep of the season, the Otters traveled overnight to Bloomington, Illinois to begin a three game series at the CornBelters. More posts coming soon!

The Wildwood Inn – Tiki Huts

(FLORENCE, Kentucky) – The Wildwood Inn has a lot of themed rooms and today was the day for exploring. Here are the pictures of the one-of-a-kind tiki hut village and rooms that are available at the hotel…enjoy!

Unusual and unique

(FLORENCE, Kentucky) – Wow – what an interesting day. The temperature was 93 degrees at first pitch and the heat index was at 109! It was sweltering all day long but an incredible experience. Other unusual highlights include Naked Karate Girls, a light tower power outage and more. Here are all the pictures!
